What Should My Voltage Gauge Read While Driving
What Should My Voltage Gauge Read While Driving. The volts will read between 9 and 14 depending on the load. All within norms, but looking at the gauge my first impression was that it was fairly high.

And most fully charged batteries should read around 12.5 to 12.8 volts. 13.7 volts will be when your alternator is busy recharging the battery. Readings of 14 to 14.5 volts on the gauge when as a good sign.
Fully Charged Automotive Batteries Should Measure At 12.6 Volts Or Above.
The guage is max out at the guage, and 11.5 at the supply wire. If you left your lights on (by mistake of course) for a couple of hours and were able to start your car you would see the amp gauge indicating a + amps reading telling you that it is trying to bring the battery voltage back up to snuff! Gauge showed about 2.5 marks above 13v.
Oluseun, With The Engine Running The Gauge Should Measure The Output Of Your Alternator.
When the state of charge is high, the voltage is lowered slightly to prevent overcharging. The ammeter gauge should read a little greater than zero when the engine is on and the system is functioning properly. You should get the same (or very close) reading at the large post on the rear of the alternator, then start it up.
The Voltage Is The Same Throughout The System.
I'll give you a hint, the guage is trying to read 24v! If it doesn't match a known accurate voltmeter, its the gauge. Readings of 14 to 14.5 volts on the gauge when as a good sign.
Readings Of 14 To 14.5 Volts On The Gauge When As A Good Sign.
Stopped for gas, restarted vehicle and it read 13.9 and stayed for the next hour or so of driving 75mph. When your alternator goes out, it will be way down toward the lower end. While driving today, i noticed the battery bar gauge that i have on the dash looked a little lower than usual so i pulled the battery voltage screen up and it read 14.1.

In fact i would worry if. This is typical of a properly operating charging system. I agree with bearone though that the dash voltmeter is off, in my estimates by about 1v from what you are actually putting out.
